One way is to remove the passenger side cat assembly and, if you need it, cut a corner off the heat shield. The Servo (big lump thingy on right side of trans housing):ī-bodies are clearance-limited when it comes to the servo. You don't need any more confusion than you've already got.ġ. Once you are done with an old spring, start a collection of old springs in a jar or box, and get them off your workbench. Just like spark plug wires, the best way is to concentrate on only one new/old at a time. I don't know if this is a rule or not, just something I've noticed. Also, I have noticed that Transgo springs are typically wound in the opposite direction of the OEM spring they are replacing. Also, doublecheck each spring you use to make sure it's the right one. DO NOT open any of the bags until you need a particular part. There are LOTS of springs and small parts in the TransGo kit. You don't have much room for error on these bolts, so use a name brand socket set like Craftsman or somebody on them so you don't strip them.ĥ. The heads on these bolts are very shallow and do not tolerate lousy soft-metal sockets. You must use QUALITY sockets on the valvebody bolts. Don't be scared by all the words - if you're good with a wrench, you can do it, you just can't make even one mistake so it's important to pay attention to detail.Ĥ. Also, get very familiar with the TransGo instructions and pictures.ģ. Read the instructions through first so you get an idea of what you're doing. Make several copies of this and the TransGo assembly instructions. Fellow UNYISSO and INEGMA members who have contributed tips and made this writeup better, including Jesse Z, MadDog Servati, and Gary Meier (who can do this install for you if you're in the Northeast USA at a reasonable price).ġ. See their number on the TransGo instructions.Ģ. Also, the TransGo tech support line is very helpful if you get into a bind. Bernard Tripp for his advice and help during this. The springs are color-coded, so if you are color-blind, find a friend who isn't so they can help you.ġ. However, I've included a few pics that I've found to be helpful. The TransGo instructions are copyrighted so that's why they aren't reprinted here. Impact wrench for the exhaust, and some sort of power ratchet or socket adaptor for your power drill for doing the many many bolts that have to be removed and reinstalled in this project. You can use vaseline but I don't know if/when it dissolves in trans fluid.ģ. You can buy a tub of it at a GM dealership or Napa. TransJel, a grease that dissolves in transmission fluid. Also, appropriate drill bits including (if doing custom hole sizes like for Pro-Built install)ġ0. 1/16" or 0.040" drill bit for modifying the EPC filter screen. I am not a professional, but I've disassembled more than a few 4L60Es that could have benefitted from a TransGo, especially later in life. Furthermore, doing a Transgo on a higher-mileaged transmission is very beneficial as it forces you to address and fix some issues that crop up after 75k miles. The TransGo reprogramming kit addresses a multitude of small problems and quirks with the 4L60E that can shorten its life. If you're like me and you are willing to deal with the outcomes of your screwups, then go for it otherwise, paying someone else to do it is very well worth it, and you can blame someone else if it doesn't turn out right. So, it is well worth paying someone else to do it if you doubt your skills. You may end up taking the pan and/or valvebody back off a second time to fix a goof-up too. If you are a first-timer, it may very well take you 8 hours, you'll get a lot of trans fluid on you, and because of being under the car, cause physical pain. It is very involved, somewhat physically demanding, and painstaking. Please read these instructions and consider whether you are able to do it.
